Interactive Dialogue on the Annual report of The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

50th Session of the UN Human Rights Council Statement by Finland, 14 June 2022.

Mr. President,

Finland aligns itself with the EU statement.  We thank the High Commissioner for her report. Her mandate has our unwavering support.

The unlawful Russian invasion has severely hampered Ukraine’s vital grain production and export. This combined with COVID19-pandemic disruptions and drought has devastating effects for millions. Responding to the food security crisis, Finland provides financial assistance through UN agencies and the ICRC to several countries in dire need. We work together with all stakeholders to ensure that the global response is human rights-based.  We also continue to call on Russia to end the invasion. No one should go hungry.

Severe free speech restrictions in Russia and China, amongst others, are Finland’s long-time concerns. We are also deeply concerned of human rights violations against for example Uighurs, Rohingyas and LGBTIQ-persons as well as other minorities.

Protection of human rights and diversity is a foundation of prosperous societies.  As a long-term financial supporter of the OHCHR, we support the Office’s efforts in this regard.

We are also determined to continue support to the women and girls in Afghanistan and call for the leadership in the country to ensure the full realization of their rights and human rights of all Afghans.

Thank you.
