Finnish Internet Forum to discuss freedom of speech and regulation

The Finnish Internet Forum will be held on Thursday 29 September 2022, after a break of three years. The themes of the event include the impacts that giant platform economy companies may have on freedom of speech and EU regulation concerning the internet.

Introductions to the themes will be given by Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka and Member of European Parliament Miapetra Kumpula-Natri. The agenda also includes three panel discussions.

Among the topics is whether giant platform economy companies are the best thing that has happened to freedom of speech or a threat that is even worse than what Orwell imagined.

The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra will lead the discussion on topical EU projects. Internet is at the heart of the EU regulation that is being reformed, but what does this all mean for Finland? This section of the event will focus e.g. on the different perspectives on the opportunities opened by data regulation.

The topic for the afternoon will be the UN Summit of the Future to be held next year. The perspective on this is how the national and regional platforms that facilitate the discussion on internet governance can support the work to prepare for the summit. The discussion platform European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) will be organised in Tampere in June 2023, a couple of months before the UN summit.
