Vice-presidency of Human Rights Council offers Finland opportunity to advocate international cooperation
Finland’s membership of the UN Human Rights Council continues until the end of 2024. This year, Ambassador Heidi Schroderus-Fox, Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations Office at Geneva, is serving as one of the Council’s Vice-Presidents. The President and Vice-Presidents are responsible for upholding the Council’s mandate to protect and promote human rights.

Foreign Ministry consults representatives of civil society organisations before the 56th session of UN Human Rights Council
At the end of May, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs invited representatives of civil society organisations to comment on Finland’s participation in the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council. The discussions focused on increasingly narrow civic space in countries such as Belarus, Uganda and Myanmar and on the rights of women and girls in the midst of war and crises.

Changes to management structure and foreign functions of Team Finland network
The management structure of the Team Finland network in Finland will be renewed and the foreign activities of Business Finland will be integrated into the Foreign Service. The changes will proceed in stages and the implementation will take place in cooperation with the business community.

In European elections, 15,221 voters cast their vote at advance polling stations abroad
A total of 15,071 persons visited the Finnish diplomatic and consular missions abroad to vote in advance in the elections to the European Parliament. Altogether 150 crew members voted on board Finnish vessels. In the 2019 European elections, 16,547 persons voted abroad at the Finnish missions and on board vessels.

Schengen visa fees to increase in June
The European Commission decided on 22 May 2024 to increase Schengen visa fees as of 11 June 2024. The increase will apply worldwide.

UN Committee against Torture issues recommendations to Finland
The United Nations Committee against Torture examined the eighth periodic report submitted by Finland under the Convention against Torture. A public oral hearing of the Finnish delegation was held in connection with the examination. The Committee issued its concluding observations and recommendations in Geneva on 10 May.
