Minister Toivakka: Negotiations to liberalize trade in environmental goods are most welcome
Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade Lenita Toivakka characterizes the multilateral negotiations to liberalize trade in environmental goods (Environmental Goods Agreement, EGA) beginning today in Geneva as most welcome from the perspective of Finnish industry. Finland has a strong and rapidly developing cleantech sector with considerable export potential.
President Ahtisaari appointed as expert in the Sri Lanka investigation
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Ms Navi Pillay has appointed Mr Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland, as an expert in the investigation into human rights violations and abuses by both sides during the armed conflict in Sri Lanka. President Ahtisaari will be joined by Ms Silvia Cartwright, former Governor-General and High Court judge of New Zealand, and Ms Asma Jahangir, former President of Pakistan’s Supreme Court Bar Association and of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
The unlocked peacebuilding potential of women and natural resources
The Permanent Mission of Finland organized a side-event during the 26th session of the Human Rights Council to present the policy report “Women and Natural Resources: Unlocking the Peacebuilding Potential”. The report was released by UNEP, UN Women, United Nations Peace Building Support Office and UNDP in November 2013 with the aim of improving the understanding of the complex relationship between women and natural resources in conflict-affected settings.
Finland becomes top donor to UN Women
Finland increases its contribution to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) this year by 6 million euros. This means the total core contribution of Finland in 2014 will be around 20 million euros ($27 million USD), which makes Finland the top donor for the UN Women.
Finland chairs the WIPO General Assembly
The Permanent Representative of Finland in Geneva, Ambassador Päivi Kairamo, chairs the General Assembly at the 53rd Series of Assemblies of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from 8 to 9 May. The General Assembly appointed Mr Francis Gurry from Australia as the Director General of the WIPO. The General Assembly also discusses a possible diplomatic conference on the design law treaty.
Physicist Stuart Parkin wins 2014 Millennium Technology prize for opening big data era
Technology Academy Finland (TAF) has declared innovator Prof. Stuart Parkin as winner of the 2014 Millennium Technology Prize, the prominent award for technological innovation. Parkin’s innovations have led to a huge expansion of data acquisition and storage capacities, which in turn have underpinned the evolution of large data centres and cloud services, social networks, music and film distribution online. The prize is worth one million euros.
