Finland chairs the WIPO General Assembly
The Permanent Representative of Finland in Geneva, Ambassador Päivi Kairamo, chairs the General Assembly at the 53rd Series of Assemblies of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from 8 to 9 May. The General Assembly appointed Mr Francis Gurry from Australia as the Director General of the WIPO. The General Assembly also discusses a possible diplomatic conference on the design law treaty.

Physicist Stuart Parkin wins 2014 Millennium Technology prize for opening big data era
Technology Academy Finland (TAF) has declared innovator Prof. Stuart Parkin as winner of the 2014 Millennium Technology Prize, the prominent award for technological innovation. Parkin’s innovations have led to a huge expansion of data acquisition and storage capacities, which in turn have underpinned the evolution of large data centres and cloud services, social networks, music and film distribution online. The prize is worth one million euros.

Finland donates 5 million EUR for trade-related projects in least developed countries
The Government of Finland has decided a new donation of 5 million Euros to the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) Multi-donor Trust Fund to support EIF activities in least developed countries (LDCs) for the period 2014-2015.

WTO ministerial conference began – Finland wants results
The World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) Ninth Ministerial Conference began on Bali, Indonesia, today. Finland’s representative at the negotiations is Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade Alexander Stubb. Finland's objective is that the negotiations would lead to results.

Simpler method introduced for calculating short stays on a Schengen Visa
Short stays in the Schengen Area are calculated according to a new method starting from 18 October 2013. When the maximum short stay and its follow-up period was previously calculated in months, it is now calculated in days. In practice, the change does not have a significant effect on the movement of ordinary passengers. The change is based on Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council 610/2013/EU.

Finland spurs the UN Member States in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goal on equality by 2015
Finland paid much attention to gender equality during the UN week in New York. With its prominent announcement of additional funding, Finland wanted to inspire other countries to support the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal on the position women before the deadline in 2015.
