Finland ratifies the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol
On 11 May 2016, Finland deposited its instrument of ratification concerning the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and its Optional Protocol with the Secretary General of the United Nations. The Convention and its Optional Protocol will thus enter into force for Finland on 10 June 2016.

Prime Minister Sipilä in London on Finland's support to Syria and its neighbouring countries
Prime Minister Sipilä will participate in the Supporting Syria and the Region Conference in London on 4 February together with over 30 other Heads of State or Government. The Conference is being hosted by the Heads of Government of the UK, Germany, Kuwait, Norway, and the UN Secretary General.

“Strong UN. Better world”
The United Nations Office at Geneva is one of the United Nations Headquarters, where issues related to peace and security, human rights, humanitarian aid, climate and environment, trade and development as well as many other issues affecting the whole world, are addressed every day. Therefore and to mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, the UN Office in Geneva has decided to open the doors of the Palace of Nations to general public and hold an Open Day on 24 October 2015.

Finland’s Basic Education Act receives prestigious international award
Finland’s “Basic Education Act” is the winner of the 2015 Future Policy Award on securing children’s rights. The Award will be presented at a ceremony in Geneva today by the World Future Council, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and UNICEF during the 133rd IPU Assembly.

Ambassador committed to Geneva Gender Champions
Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva and United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva have launched Geneva Gender Champions (GGC), a new leadership network dedicated to making gender equality a priority throughout the multilateral diplomatic work in Geneva. Ambassador of Finland, Ms Päivi Kairamo has taken the Gender Panel Parity Pledge, which puts gender parity at the forefront as they consider invitations to participate in panel discussions.

Global Consultation on World Humanitarian Summit in Geneva on 14-16 October
The first-ever World Humanitarian Summit (WHS), set to take place on 23-24 May 2016 in Istanbul, is a call to action by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to reshape the global agenda for humanitarian action. It is managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) and implemented by the World Humanitarian Summit secretariat.

Petteri Taalas appointed Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization
Finnish Meteorological Institute Director General Petteri Taalas has been appointed the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Institute (WMO) for the term 2016-2019. WMO is the UN’s weather, sea and climate expert. The Secretary-General heads the WMO’s Secretariat, which is located in Geneva.
