Nomination of candidates for 2018 Millennium Technology Prize
Technology Academy Finland (TAF) invites the scientific and innovation community around the world to nominate candidates for the 2018 Millennium Technology Prize. The nomination period opens April 3 and nominations will be accepted until July 31, 2017. The one million euro Prize is one of the largest innovation prizes in the world.

UN periodic review of human rights in Finland
Finland’s human rights record will be under a periodic review at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on 3 May 2017. Minister of Social Affairs and Health Pirkko Mattila will head Finland’s delegation to the meeting. The delegation consists of representatives from different ministries and civil society organisations’ representatives who have an independent observer status.

WTO SKI RACE 2017 organized by the Permanent Mission of Finland
The annual WTO Ski Race took place this year in Les Gets, France on Saturday the 4th of March. Since team Finland had performed well in the previous race, the Permanent Mission had the honor to organize the competition this year. Organizing the event in 2017 was particularly meaningful for Finland as we are celebrating our 100 years of independence this year.

WTO agreement reduces businesses’ trading costs
The World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) enters into force on 22 February 2017. The agreement deals with fees and formalities connected with export and import, as well as transit. TFA aims to expedite customs clearance, reduce unnecessary paperwork and improve predictability and access to information.

Finland to defend girls’ and women’s rights and support the Dutch initiative
It is a cause for concern for Finland that the work done to enhance the sexual and reproductive health of women in developing countries is facing headwinds. In its own development policy, Finland has therefore focussed its resources on the strengthening of girls’ and women’s rights.

Conference on Supporting Syrians and the Region in Helsinki
A Syria conference, hosted at the UN’s request by Finland, will be held in Helsinki on 24 January 2017. The conference will present the UN’s humanitarian priorities for Syria in 2017 and launch the Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan (3RP) for 2017–2018, which extends to Syria’s neighbouring countries. Through this conference the UN seeks to draw attention to the underfunded needs of assistance for Syria and its neighbouring countries.
