OECD: Finland’s development aid increasing
International development aid has increased 6,5% between 2009 and 2010, according to a report released by the OECD in the beginning of April. Finnish development aid increased 8,8% between 2009 and 2010, reaching over a EUR 1 billion, which equals to 0,55% of the gross national income (GNI).
National Coalition Party, SDP and True Finns the biggest parties in the Finnish parliamentary election
The National Coalition Party became the biggest party in the 2011 Finnish parliamentary election. The National Coalition gained 44 seats, the Social Democrats 42 seats and the True Finns 39 seats of the total of 200 seats in the Finnish Parliament.

UN Special Rapporteur: Rights of people with disability into the mainstream
UN Special Rapporteur on Disability Shuaib Chalklen visited Finland to promote mainstreaming of disability issues. At a seminar held by the coordination group on disability policy, Chalklen regretted the invisibility of disability issues in the Millennium Development Goals. In Finland’s development cooperation, disability issues have had an important role particularly in cooperation with civil society organisations.
Ghana to Improve its Coast Guard with Finnish Aid
Finland has agreed to fund a two-year coast guard development project in Ghana. The Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, Paavo Väyrynen, approved the interest subsidy on 3rd March 2011. The EUR 14,6 million will be used to develop coast guarding on the coast and riverbanks in Ghana and Lake Volta. The project will commence this year, and is planned to end in 2013.
Education as Development in the Palestinian Territories
Finland has signed an agreement with the Palestinian National Authority to support an education sector programme; ‘Education Development Strategic Plan (EDSP) 2008 - 2012 - Towards Quality Education for Development’. The EDSP’s goal is to support arrangement of education and to enhance the quality of teaching in the Palestinian Territories. The agreement entered into force in the beginning of March.
Finland Combating Climate Change in the Pacific Islands and the Caribbean
Finland has been co-operating with the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) on various environmental and climate change projects in the recent years. Issues that have been on the agenda are especially related to sustainable development through renewable energy projects and disaster mitigation.
