Finland and Ghana organize a side event at the UN Trade Forum 2019

In the framework of the UN Trade Forum on SDGs and Climate Change, Finland and Ghana are organizing a side event on Industrial Circularity on Wednesday, September 11th 2019 at 1-2.30pm in collaboration with the UNCTAD.

The discussion on circularity within global value chains and on transition to a low-carbon circular economy is of utmost importance: Implementing Agenda 2030 and the Paris Climate Agreement are global undertakings that warrant new innovative action, and trade can be part of the solution. Moving towards a more circular economy delivers benefits such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pressure on the environment, improving the security of supply of raw materials, increasing competitiveness, stimulating innovation, boosting economic growth and creating jobs. The industrial sector plays a highly important role in the circular economy transition, and change is taking place at rapid speed.

Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, together with Accenture, has produced a guidebook for industrial circularity, while UNCTAD is supporting DFID in launching and managing a major research programme that will focus on reducing the levels of environmental pollution and increase economic returns generated by manufacturing in developing countries, by increasing circularity of selected manufacturing and industrial processes. These shifts towards industrial circularity are happening across the globe, and change will cascade through value chains in different jurisdictions.
