Sixty years of earning stripes
Marimekko has been a part of Finnish homes and fashion for 60 years. To celebrate, the Design Museum in Helsinki presents an exhibition of products from all six decades. Exhibition 'Marimekko: A whole life' is on display at the Design Museum in Helsinki until May 29, 2011.

After the elections: Now the game really starts
The results of the April 17, 2011 Finnish parliamentary elections are being touted as dramatic, with the National Coalition Party holding on to 44 seats, the Social Democrats managing 42 and the populist “True Finns” jumping astoundingly from six seats to 39. Voter turnout was respectable and made the elections a victory for democracy: 70.4 percent of the eligible population of Finland voted, a clear increase over the 2007 elections.

National Coalition Party, SDP and True Finns the biggest parties in the Finnish parliamentary election
The National Coalition Party became the biggest party in the 2011 Finnish parliamentary election. The National Coalition gained 44 seats, the Social Democrats 42 seats and the True Finns 39 seats of the total of 200 seats in the Finnish Parliament.

Peace mediation through the eyes of Kofi Annan and a former child soldier
How is peace built at the highest political level? Or, how does a victim of cruel human rights violations end up building a career as a hip hop artist – and a peace activist? Crisis Management Initiative, the organisation established by President Martti Ahtisaari, celebrates its 10th anniversary with a seminar to be held in Helsinki on 19 April. The seminar invitees include experts of peace mediation, from Kofi Annan and Stephen Heintz to Emmanuel Jal.

Foreign Office volume sheds light into crucial years of UK-Nordic relations
The latest volume in Foreign Office’s Documents on British Policy Overseas series focuses on Britain’s relations with the five Nordic countries in the crucial years leading up to Cold War. The volume was launched in London in a seminar that brought together FCO historians and experts from all Nordic countries.

Finnish contemporary literature: A wealth of voices
Bertolt Brecht once noted that Finns are silent in two languages. Maybe so, but the total number of titles published annually in Finland is tremendous. The country sees the publication of 13,000-14,000 books a year, over 4,500 of them new works. Only in Iceland are more books published per capita.

Helsinki – consider it solved
CNN International spent two weeks in Helsinki to have a closer look at how the city deals with challenges such as lack of daylight. As a result, CNN filmed four videos to its Future Cities series, presenting Helsinki as a functional, future-orientated design city with excellent snow-how.
