UK construction sector ready for BIM from Finland – Join us in London
The Building Information Modelling (BIM) sector in the United Kingdom is one of the most developed in the world. In 2011 the country had a strategy for BIM according to which in 2016 BIM became obligatory in public projects until 2025. The aim is to move to level three BIM, which is deeply embedded in the wider digital economy. This will require further development of technologies and commercial models.
The UK construction sector contributes more than £110 billion gross value added to the UK economy (nearly 7% of the total). Over a quarter of construction output comes from the public sector, central government being the biggest single construction client there. There are three main construction sectors in the UK: Commercial and social (approximately 45%), Residential (approximately 40%), and Infrastructure (approximately 15%). Approximately 60% of construction output is new build, whilst 40% is refurbishment and maintenance.
After a difficult start of the 2018, the UK's construction sector bounced back in June, and again in July with activity increasing at its fastest level in 14 months, as the IHS Markit/CIPS construction Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) jumped from 53.1 in June to 55.8 in July. This is due to recovery in house building and commercial work: house building has risen at the fastest rate since December 2015, and construction overall has grown at the fastest rate in over a year. Big-ticket infrastructure projects such as the expansion of Heathrow and HS2 trainline are seen crucial to ensuring the UK remains an infrastructure leader on the world stage also after Britain leaves the EU.
The recent Construction Sector Deal by the UK government (July 2018) sets a vision to build new homes faster and a commitment to using digital technologies. This 420 million pound deal will establish a new partnership between the government and the construction sector, aiming to build new homes in weeks, or even days, instead of months. At the core of the strategy is to exploit digital technologies, particularly BIM and offsite manufacturing techniques.
