Finland ranks first in EU digital comparison
Finland ranked first in the European Union’s digital performance comparison. The European Commission’s annual Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) monitors the digital performance of EU Member States and tracks their progress in digitalisation. Finland has been at the top of the list for several years, ranking number two in 2021 and number one in 2019 and 2020.

EU leaders agree on sixth package of sanctions against Russia
At the special meeting of the European Council, which began on 30 May in Brussels, the EU leaders agreed to impose new sanctions on Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine. The leaders were joined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky via video conference for a discussion at the beginning of the meeting. Finland was represented at the meeting by Prime Minister Sanna Marin.

Prime Minister Sanna Marin and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen discussed topical EU matters in Helsinki on Thursday 3 February. During her visit to Finland, President von der Leyen also met President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö.

European Council calls for better vaccination coverage
The main topics on the agenda at the European Council held on Thursday 16 December in Brussels were the COVID-19 pandemic, crisis management and resilience, energy prices, security and defence, migration, and external relations. The Euro Summit held in connection with the meeting focused on the state of the European economy. Prime Minister Sanna Marin represented Finland at the meeting. -

EU and Eastern Partnership countries pledge to strengthen cooperation
At their summit in Brussels on Wednesday 15 December, the EU Member States and the countries in the Eastern Partnership adopted a joint declaration and a revised programme for Eastern Partnership policy beyond 2000. The long-term policy objectives emphasise recovery, resilience and reform. Prime Minister Sanna Marin represented Finland at the summit. -

Prime Minister Marin to attend European Council meeting on 21st and 22nd of October

Government expresses position on comprehensive reform of EU migration and asylum policy
The European Commission issued a comprehensive communication on the reform of migration and asylum policy on 23 September. The communication was accompanied by five legislative proposals. The Government expressed its position on the Commission's proposals in its communications submitted to Parliament on 12 November.
