Finland to recognise Kosovo independence along with the majority of EU Member States

European Union foreign ministers reached an agreement concerning the EU stand on the independence declaration of Kosovo. Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva considers the result very important with regard to the development of the region and the unity of the EU.

EU foreign ministers reaffirmed their commitment to promoting stability in the Western Balkans and the distinctive European perspective of the region. The Union will increase its presence in Kosovo as the civilian crisis operation of some 2 000 judicial and police experts will be launched.

The conclusions adopted unianimously by the ministers will enable the recognition of Kosovo and further development of relations with it. Finland announced it will recognise Kosovo's independence and it will launch national preparations to this end.

Finland will participate in the police and judicial operation in Kosovo with a significant contribution. Finland will assume command of the central KFOR battlegroup in summer, and the number of the country’s peacekeepers will rise to 450. In addition, Foreign Minister Kanerva, the Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, stated the importance of the continued presence of the organisation in the region.

Finland is also prepared to give 15 million euros in support of Kosovo’s economic development in the next few years. "This shows that Finland is ready to continue its responsibilities in a significant manner in promoting stability and well-being in the entire region", says Minister Kanerva.
