90 Years of Autonomy: The Åland Example as a Tool for Resolving Conflicts

A seminar “90 Years of Autonomy: The Åland Example as a Tool for Resolving Conflicts” will be held in the European Parliament in Brussels on 2 October. The seminar examines the ways in which the Åland Example and its components can be used in mediation mechanisms and conflict situations and under which circumstances its applicability can be further increased.

“Today, celebrating 90 years as an autonomous region of Finland, Åland is still viewed as an international example of a successful solution to a minority conflict”, said Mr. Björn Häggblom, Head of Communications at the Government of Åland.

The Key Note Speaker is Mr. Paavo Lipponen, former Prime Minister of Finland. The director of the Åland Islands Peace Institute, Dr. Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark functions as the moderator of the event. The panel includes Ms. Elisabeth Nauclér, Member of the Parliament of Finland, representing the Åland Islands, Mr. Nils Torvalds, Member of the European Parliament, Finland and Ms. Kinga Gál, Member of the European Parliament, Hungary.

The seminar is arranged by the Government of Åland in co-operation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and the Permanent Representation of Finland to the European Union.

The seminar is followed by the vernissage of the exhibition “Paradise Found – Åland”, a photo exhibition by award winning photographer Daniel Eriksson. The exhibition displays the beautiful archipelago of Finland and explains the historical background of the autonomy as well as the modern Åland of the 21st century.

The seminar will take place on Tuesday 2 October 13:00-15:00h in the European Parliament, room PHS 51B. Registration opens at 11:30 and takes place at the Espace Simone Veil Agora entrance.

The exhibition is on show from Tuesday 2 October to 5 October in Galeria Cafétaria in the European Parliament. The vernissage will be at 18:00 on 2 October.
