Postgraduate course in conference interpreting

Applications are invited for the 2006

POSTGRADUATE COURSE IN CONFERENCE INTERPRETING (60 ECTS-credits)

arranged by the the University of Helsinki Palmenia Centre for Continuing Education, Vantaa, in cooperation with MonAKO, the Multilingual Communication Programme in the Department of General Linguistics.

- The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary vocational skills to work as conference interpreters on the freelance market and/or for international organisations such as the EU.

- This intensive training course will begin in January 2006 and will last until the end of June 2006. The course requires full-time attendance. It will be held on the premises of the University of Helsinki, in the Metsätalo building.

- Applicants must have a higher academic degree (MA or equivalent), a mastery of their mother tongue (A-language) and an excellent command of two foreign languages: either an active near-native language (B-language) or a strong passive language (C-language). The course languages for 2006 will be Finnish and English, plus one or two of the following: Greek, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Hungarian. An entrance test will be arranged in Helsinki on November 10–11, 2005, for the languages in which there are a sufficient number of applicants.

The entrance test, the interim test half-way through the course, and the final test are all disqualifying.
