Minister for Foreign Affairs Haavisto to visit Washington DC

Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will visit Washington DC on 27–28 February.

Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto will meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Deputy National Security Adviser Matthew Pottinger, and representatives of the US administration and Congress. Additionally, Minister Haavisto will speak at an event on mediation and the role of women in conflict resolution, held at Georgetown University.

The aim of the visit is to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and to discuss such topical foreign policy issues as the peace process in Afghanistan and the Middle East, Russia, the situation in Libya, and the transatlantic relationship.

Close and extensive bilateral relations with the United States are important for Finland. The relations between the two countries are good and cooperation in different sectors and policy areas is comprehensive. Close cooperation and warm relations between the European Union and the United States are also important for Finland's economy and security.

“The transatlantic relationship plays a key role in responding to international challenges. Finland and the United States are prepared, for their part, to promote this relationship and to advance international cooperation to help address common challenges,” says Minister Haavisto.
