Finland and South Africa signed a Letter of Intent on cooperation in mediation
During the state visit of the President of the Republic of Finland to the Republic of South Africa, a Letter of Intent on Co-Operation in Peace Mediation was signed on 25 April between the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Finland and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa.
International Convention for Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance to enter into force in Finland
A new human rights treaty will enter into force in Finland. The International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance will enter into force in Finland on 23 April 2023. Finland ratified the Convention a month earlier in New York.
Finland promotes sexual and reproductive health, tax transparency and school meals in developing countries together with international non-governmental organisations
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs awarded EUR 13 million to five international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) for 2023–2025. This is an established call for government grant applications. The previous call for applications was in 2021.
Support to Ukraine raised level of Finland’s official development assistance in 2022
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has put pressure on official development assistance (ODA) budgets in Finland and in many other EU Member States, according to the preliminary data on 2022 released by the OECD today. Especially the level of in-donor refugee costs increased in Finland.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Haavisto visited Somalia
Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto visited Mogadishu, Somalia, on 7 April. He met President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abshir Omar Jama, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Khadija M. Almakhzoumi and international actors in Somalia.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Haavisto to visit Kenya
Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will visit Nairobi, Kenya, from 6 to 7 April. He will meet Kenya’s Minister of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Alfred Mutua, leaders of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other international organisations, and representatives of civil society. Among the topics of the meetings are Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, bilateral relations between Finland and Kenya and regional questions in the Horn of Africa, such as peace and security, youth-inclusive peace processes, and environmental and climate matters.
