Foreign Minister Tuomioja welcomes the change of Estonian election law

Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja is very pleased with the recent decision by the Estonian Parliament to change the election law so that the knowledge of the Estonian language is no longer an obligatory requirement for candidates in parliamentary and local elections.
“The Estonian legislation in this field is now in harmony with European standards. We can congratulate the Estonians for that”, Tuomioja says. “The change of the law was the last prerequisite for completing the task of the Mission of the Organisation for European Security and Cooperation (OSCE) in Estonia.
The decision marks one step forward in the integration of Estonia to the European Union. The work of the OSCE Mission can now be succesfully ended.”
