Women as Leaders in Public Service - Finnish-British Colloquium

Women leaders in Public Service from Finland and the UK will gather for a meeting in Helsinki hosted by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on 31 August - 1 September. Also invited are representatives from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

The aim is to exchange experiences and have a debate particularly on training for women in leadership positions in Public Service. It is hoped that the event will also promote networking and co-operation between those participating.

The meeting will be opened by Mr Erkki Tuomioja, Minister of Foreign Affairs. Other Finnish participants will be Mrs Maija Perho, Minister for Social Affairs and Health,Mrs Tuula Haatainen, MP, Chairperson of the Delegation for Equality Issues, Mrs Pirkko Mäkinen, Ombudsman for Equality, as well as two women management training experts,
Dr Liisa Horelli and Mrs Eeva Hänninen-Salmelin, Consultant.

The British delegation will be led by Margaret Moran MP, Parliamentary Private Secretary to Baroness Sally Morgan, Minister of State at the Cabinet Office.Ms Karen West and Mrs Roisin Murray will introduce and demonstrate at the colloquium the training techniques aimed specially at women leaders which have been developed for several years now in the British Civil Service College.

Representing Britain's women research and management training will be Professor Teresa Rees of Cardiff University, who is also Commisioner for Equality for Wales and serves as European Commission adviser on questions of gender equality. Professor Joan Stringer is one of the leading experts in the field and serves as Scotland's Commissioner for Equality.

Latvia will be represented by Gunta Weismane, Director of the State Chancellery, Lithuania by Ausrine Burneikiene, Ombudsman for Equality, and Estonia by Aino Lepik von Wiren, State Secretary.

Taking part in the meeting will be over 60 participants representing different Ministries, Parliaments and other sectors of Public Service.
