Live debate by Finnish parliamentarians on our website on 23 May

Finnish parliamentarians debate nuclear energy at the Press Department of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on Thursday, 23 May, at 3pm Finnish time. The debate will be broadcast live on our website.


The Finnish Parliament votes on Friday, 24 May, on granting a permit for the building of a new nuclear power plant unit. Mr Mikko Elo, MP for the Social Democratic Party and nuclear power supporter, and Ms Maria Kaisa Aula, MP for the Centre Party and nuclear power opponent, discuss the question in an English-speaking press conference at the Press Department of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on Thursday, 23 May, at 3-4 pm Finnish time. The debate is broadcast in a video conference to the Finnish Embassy in Stockholm, and also as a RealAudiotransmission on the internet.



Mr Mikko Elo has been an MP since 1979. He is currently a member of the Grand Committee and the Environment Committee of the Parliament and Chairman of the Finnish Delegation to the Council of Europe and member of the Finnish Delegation to the Nordic Council. Mr Elo comes from Pori on the west coast of Finland and he has been working as a senior teacher at Pori Technical Institute.



Ms Maria Kaisa Aula has been an MP since 1991. She is currently Chairperson of the Finance Committee and member of the Grand Committee of the Parliament. She has also been Vice- Chairperson of the Centre Party since 1994. Ms Aula comes from Tervola in Lappland and she has been working as a researcher at the Finnish Broadcasting Company and at the University of Helsinki.
