Press release 222/2008
17 June, 2008

On 16 June the Nordic foreign ministers met in Luxembourg and agreed that an independent study should be drawn up to look into how Nordic cooperation in the area of foreign and security policy can be developed over the next 10-15 years.

Former Norwegian foreign minister Thorvald Stoltenberg has been given the task of drafting the study, which is planned to be ready by the end of this year.

The study is intended to investigate which possibilities the Nordic countries have in terms of strengthening their cooperation in order to meet future risks and challenges in the area of foreign and security policy, both in our region and globally.

Nordic cooperation has proven able to adapt to new and changing challenges. There is a renewed interest in developing this cooperation further.

The objective of the study will be to investigate which possibilities the Nordic countries have in terms of developing and deepening their cooperation in the area of foreign and security policy, and to investigate how cooperation can best help to strengthen joint action when this is needed.
