Foreign Minister Haavisto attends NB8 meeting in Kaunas

Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend a meeting of Nordic and Baltic foreign ministers, to be held in the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) cooperation format, in Kaunas in Lithuania on 6–7 September.

The foreign ministers will discuss topical foreign and security policy questions, such as Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, Nordic and Baltic support to Ukraine, topical NATO matters, energy security, and expectations for the upcoming UN General Assembly Week.

“We find that the cooperation between the Nordic and Baltic countries is natural and important. Finland has close cooperation with the countries of the NB8 format in a number of areas. It is important that the group engages in discussion on topical security policy and regional questions,” says Minister for Foreign Affairs Haavisto.

This year’s meeting will be chaired by Lithuania, the current coordinating country of NB8 cooperation. Meetings between the NB8 foreign ministers have been organised since the 1990s.

In Lithuania, Foreign Minister Haavisto will have bilateral meetings with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the Belarusian opposition leader who lives in Vilnius, Laurynas Kasčiūnas, Chair of the Lithuanian Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defence, and representatives of the Lithuanian Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs.
