President of the European Court of Human Rights to visit Finland

President of the European Court of Human Rights Robert Spano will visit Finland on 5–6 May.

During his visit, Spano will meet, among others, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto, Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson as well as President of the Supreme Court Tatu Leppänen and President of the Supreme Administrative Court Kari Kuusiniemi.

The programme also includes meetings with representatives of the Constitutional Law Committee of Parliament and the Finnish Human Rights Centre.  In addition, Spano will visit the National Courts Administration and speak at the annual conference of the Finnish Bar Association.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is an autonomous and independent court operating under the auspices of the Council of Europe. The ECHR monitors compliance with the European Convention on Human Rights. The Human Rights Convention entered into force for Finland in May 1990.

Natural and legal persons may lodge an appeal with the ECHR if they consider that a State Party to the Convention has violated their rights under the Convention.
