The Embassy of Finland in Australia has been highly commended for its energy and water saving initiatives at this year's Actsmart Business Sustainability Awards 2019 which recognises organisations making an outstanding contribution to sustainability across Canberra and the broader ACT.

Steering the Embassy's Environmental Strategy, our property manager, Tom with the help of fellow staff has helped reduce water and energy usage – this included the installation of a Aquamonitor to catch water leaks early before wasting thousands of litres of water, replacing lights with LEDs resulting in over $1000 annually in running costs and reduced heating/cooling requirements.

The Embassy of Finland in Australia also received a nomination in the following categories:

  • Biggest recycler at a small event (World Nordic Walking Day; 84%  recycling rate)
  • Biggest recycler at a large event (Finnish Crazy Games; 75% rate)

We hope to beat this recycling rate once again with future events. We recognise that there still much more we can do, but here are at the Embassy we are always striving to find new ways to innovate to operate in the most sustainable and renewable manner possible, and fingers crossed we might just be winners this time next year.
