Finnish Boys Choir to Perform in Zagreb on June 15th

In their first visit to Croatia, the impressive 60-member choir Cantores Minores will perform in Zagreb and present the best choral music from a wide repertoire to the Croatian public.   The concert will take place on June 15th at 20:00 at the Church of St. Francis, Kaptol 9, Zagreb. Admission is free.

Cantores Minores, the Helsinki Cathedral Boy’s Choir is the oldest and most famous choir of boys and young men in Finland. The concert will include works by great composers such as and Johann Sebastian Bach and Heinrich Schutz, Finnish music from the Middle Ages to contemporary composers and works on the organ. In addition to Zagreb, this Finnish choir is also conducting concerts in Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Austria and Germany.

 The choir currently has 300 members ranging from the ages of 4 to 25 years who receive high level musical training through the Cantores Minores Musical Institute which enrols only 40 boys a year after an audition. Cooperation with Helsinki schools was launched in 1996 to further expand the music training program and raise the choir’s artistic level modeled after the Dresdner Kreuzchor and the Thomanerchor from Leipzig.

Since it was founded in 1952, over 3000 choirists have been a part of Cantores Minores. They have held numerous concerts in Finland and made 51 tours to different parts of the world including Europe, USA, Canada and Japan. The President of the Republic of Finland, Ms.Tarja Halonen is patron of the Cantores Minores choir and its tours, following her predecessor Mr. Martti Ahtisaari, who initiated this patronage in 1997.
